Christmas Bird Count, Dec. 23, 2013

Sharon Irwin (Sharon.Irwin@pc.gc.ca) has requested the distribution about the following event:

Hi,

It's that time of year again!  No, not just Christmas, but the Christmas
Bird Count!

We are going to do the count on Monday December 23.  We'll meet at 10 am in
the theatre at the Wood Buffalo National Park office.

Bring your warm clothes for walking, binoculars and a friend.  We have a
photo guide of the winter birds found here.  We split up the town into
sections and everyone takes one.

If you are not up to traipsing around town and you have a bird feeder, you
can send in your results from home.  Watch for the maximum number of each
species you can hear or see at any one time.

Aurora College Guest Speaker: Trevor Lantz and Douglas Esagok -- Telling the Story of Environmental Change through Photos and Videos

This e-mail is being distributed at the request of Sarah Rosolen of Aurora College:

Hello all,

I'm very pleased to announce the next installment of the Aurora College Speaker Series will take place on Monday December 9th, from 1- 2:30 in room 148.

Trevor Lantz is a professor in the School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria.  His latest project is a community mapping website that enabled local experts from communities in the Inuvialuit and Gwich'in settlement regions to tell the story of environmental change. Aboriginal land-users documented their environmental knowledge and observations with photos and video, and these were posted on an online map that was made accessible to community members and researchers.  Over the past three years, the project has collected photos and recordings from 52 local experts at over 270 locations.  Douglas Egasok is one of the community experts from Inuvik who has participated in this project.

Come to a presentation on their project on December 9th, discussion afterwards about how our community could use this approach to document our own stories.   They will be presenting to our B.Ed. Science class during the morning (9am), with a focussed discussion afterwards on curriculum applications -- if you are interested in exploring that with us, please send me a note.

Hope to see you there!

Festival of Trees - Extending the Date

Greetings!

Please join us in community spirit to help create a beautiful display of community themed trees in the Northern Life Museum Gallery.

We are extending the date to Dec.13, 2013 for the deadline for trees to be set-up. The more the merrier, the trees will be on display throughout the month of December.

As the museum had over 300 people through the Festival of Trees exhibit in 2012 this is a great opportunity for organizations, clubs, business's and groups of friends to convey your message to the community!

Please see the attached poster for details.
