30 more collaborators needed to reach 100 women artists for International Women C

Village of Ayr [downtownayr@gmail.com] on behalf of AyrSpace has
requested distribution of the following call for Women artists:

30 more collaborators needed to reach 100 women artists for
International Women Celebrate!

Good morning:

My name is Jill Yuzwa and I am a community economic developer
located in the small village of Ayr in Southwestern Ontario, Canada
just outside Kitchener Waterloo. Kim Rempel, an International Daily
painter, and I are contacting you about an exhibition that AyrSpace
is hosting in early March to observe the Centenary of International
Women's Day called International Women Celebrate!

One hundred women artists is our objective and we are now 70 strong!
Many areas of Canada, the U.S., Europe, Asia and the Middle East
have responded.

Our turnaround time is on the shorter side (about five weeks till we
need an electronic image and a narrative from our collaborators).
This time-frame is a result of a wee bit of municipal funding we
have been shortlisted for, and in a more exciting light - a book we
are doing featuring the works submitted and the stories of the 100
women who created them.

I am tapping away to try and cover the geographies we have not
reached. We do not have any collaborators from the Northwest
Territories yet. Please have a look at the submission page on our
website or follow the blog created for the exhibit.  [
http://ayrspace.ca/ ]ayrspace.ca and [
http://iwcelebrate.blogspot.com/ ]http://iwcelebrate.blogspot.com/

Could you please put this out to established women artists in the
Territory?

Many thanks for your consideration,
Jill (and Kim)

Appetizer contest

Hello to all

We would like to ask members of the museum to bring an appetizer to the auction on Saturday evening.  Make your must-have appetizer for everyone to try.  People at the auction will be invited to chose their favourite in a blind vote.  When you bring your appetizer, make sure to see Jessica Cox.  She is the keeper of the list of who brought what.  (We will  be serving beer and sangria and pretzels.)  The winner will receive a hand-painted tray perfect for serving summer drinks or breakfast in bed!

I am looking forward to tasting the delicious goodies arrive on Saturday evening.
Thank you everyone.

Jeri

Call for artists for fund raiser at Museum

Hello everyone,

The Museum is going to host a fun filled evening of food & refreshments on August 7th to raise funds.  The main event for the evening will be a Muskoka Chair Auction.  We did this 2 years ago and it was a rousing success so we thought that we should bump it up a bit more with food & frolicing!

But - we need to call on you good, talented (or at least imaginative) people to decorate the chairs that are to be auctioned.  We have chairs, matching foot stools and tables - your choice. They can be decorated anyway you like as long as they are useable out of doors when done. Please contact us if you are interested in participating.  We can't pay you, but we would be extremely grateful and say really nice things about you in public!

Thanks!!

July's New Workshop! Metal Etching.

This is a really, really cool workshop!  Joan Irvin is the instructor, (she teaches at the Alberta College of Art & Design in Calgary), and she is just a wonderful teacher.  She has been here a few times facilitating workshops in various metal media and professional development for artists.

The poster with all the info is attached and I have attached a page of examples of etching on copper & silver to give everyone a better idea of what is achievable.  Note that the class will be working with copper.  Class size is limited to 8 participants.
Cheers,
Laurie

Fwd: Survey for Professional Development Workshops for Artists

Hello everyone,

As some of you will remember, we ran a 2-day workshop in February that dealt with such things as writing an artist statement, artist bio, how to develop your portfolio, self critiquing, how to deal with galleries, etc.  This was offered at very reasonable (heavily subsidised) rate of $45.00 and many more Fort Smith artist would have benefited than actually attended, which was a pity.

We would like to continue to help arts and fine crafts persons develop through more workshops.  We would like to know what topics you would like to see covered.

Such as:
How to develop a website?
How to present your work?
How to set up for a tradeshow or craft sale?
Grant/proposal writing basics?
More on importance of portfolios and artist information?
Copyright issues?

Please let me know what would help you develop as an arts or fine crafts person and we'll see what we can do!

Thanks,

New Exhibit on Display- "Now & Then"

In the Fall of 2005 the Northern Life Museum hosted a workshop to teach students and introduction to digital photography.  As a part of the course the students were shown images of sites and buildings in Fort Smith from the Museum's archives.  They were then encouraged to photograph the same site or building as they appear now.  The finished product is the "Now & Then" exhibit that is on display in the lower gallery of the museum.  We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
From Now and Then

The Northern Life Museum & Cultural Centre is pleased to have produced this exhibit with the generous support of the NWT Arts Council.

Upcoming Events and Exhibits in February and March

Renovations
The museum has been undergoing some major renovations to its air handling system for the past few weeks; so thank you to everyone for bearing with us.  These renovations are long in coming and we are very pleased that they will be completed for the 2010 season.  The air handling system is one of the ways the museum controls the environment inside the building.  It will help to regulate the temperature and humidity and control the how clean the air is.  Both are essential to keeping our artifacts in good condition.  This is true for the artifacts on display or in storage.  Environmental controls also make the museum more comfortable for the people who visit.  So we are all warm enough when we need to be warm and cool enough when we need to be cool.  It is good for our objects and good for our visitors so we are very pleased.  If you have any other questions about the renovations to the museum
Email me
