Northern Images is hosting their Grand Re-opening and 40th birthday party
this spring. We would like to have a schedule of live artist events in the
gallery for several days to help celebrate. We are also developing a full
schedule of events for the Canadian Medical Conference week here in
Yellowknife in August.

Get ready for Spring - Seedy Saturday is here!

Whether you're planning your first garden or you've been gardening for years, there will be something for everyone this Saturday at the museum from 12-5! 

Come pick up some free seeds for your veggie garden, plant a sunflower with your child, and learn more in our gardening workshops! 

Workshops

12-1           Plan your first vegetable garden

1-1:30        Kids plant a sunflower in a newspaper pot to take home with you

                 Adults choose some free seeds for your   garden and look at the gardening displays

1:30-2       Hands-on "Grow your own sprouts" workshop   – bring a wide-mouth jar if you have one

2-2:30       How to transplant local medicinal and food plants into your yard or garden 
                Question and Answer with Bev Tupper

2:30-3:15   Medicinal plants – what to grow for a family pharmacy with herbalist Capucine Chartrand 

3:15-4:15   Garden Q&A – bring your questions to our panel of experienced local gardeners

4:15-4:45   Test your soil – learn to test your soil for pH, Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potash


Family Activities

Children are welcome all day, but the activities that will be most fun for kids will be between 1 and 2 pm (planting a sunflower, and grow-your-own sprouts)

Displays

The following displays will be set up all day:

  • How to make a self-watering planter
  • How to make an indoor grow light
  • Composting with worms

Upcoming Events

Hello Museum members,
 
We are pleased to announce all these wonderful activities happening this month at the Northern Life Museum. Please see the attachments for more details.
 
Sugar Shack: Friday, March 9, 2012, 1-4 pm at the Rec. Centre. Come celebrate Wood Buffalo Frolics and support the museum with the purchase of some maple treats. Interested in volunteering for this event? We need two more people to help out with the sales of maple syrup on a stick! Call Diane at 872-2859 or e-mail: admin@nlmcc.ca to volunteer. 
 
Chili Cook-Off: Saturday, March 10, 2012, 1-3 pm at the Northern Life Museum. We have great prizes for the best chili voted by the public! Enter your best pot of chili or come sample what the best community chefs have to offer!
 
Permaculture Workshop: Saturday, March 17 or Sunday, March 18, 9 am- 6 pm at the Northern Life Museum. Permaculture is a method of food production based on natural ecosystems and includes less space and less maintenance. Workshop includes a potluck lunch.
 
Seedy Saturday: Saturday, March 24, 1-4 pm at the Northern Life Museum. Bring the whole family to gather seeds for your garden and learn more about gardening in Fort Smith.
 
Pancake Breakfast: Saturday, March 31, 9 am - 11 am at the Northern Life Museum. Free pancake breakfast with the purchase of a membership to the Northern LIfe Museum. Come have breakfast with the family and then tour the Northern Life Museum.
